Study Abroad Options – There are many possibilities for study abroad, which can range from programs focusing on academic study to others with a focus on service-learning volunteer work. Some possibilities include:

  1. Universities or Colleges with their Own Programs
  2. Study Abroad Organizations
  3. Foreign University with Its Own Program
  4. Direct Enrollment in a Foreign Institution

Universities or Colleges with their Own Program are programs run by post-secondary institutions.

Study Abroad Organizations* – These are independent organizations providing programs for students interested in particular fields of study and countries.

  • WorldStudy.gov – Offers general information about study abroad along with listings of opportunities in other countries.
  • Institute of International Education– Provides a search for study abroad programs. This site also discusses reasons for studying abroad, selecting a program, preparations before leaving, living abroad, and reentry. Links to resources for organizations, travel, and publications are also provided.
  • StudyAbroad.com – A useful search engine to find academic year/semester, summer, language, intern/volunteer, and teach abroad programs by city, country, subject, and availability.
  • CEA – Cultural Experiences Abroad – Offers programs to various places around the world for U.S. and Canadian citizens.
  • API – Academic Programs International – An independent study abroad organization, API provides living, travel, educational, and cultural opportunities for U.S. students in France, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
  • CIEE – Council on International Education Exchange – It is difficult to find work overseas without professional assistance. CIEE has connections to make finding employment abroad easier. This webpage will discuss work opportunities abroad along with how to go about obtaining those jobs.
  • Lexia Overseas Study Program - The Lexia program offers students the opportunity to learn the language and culture of other countries while researching in a foreign setting.
  • SIT – School for International Training - Field-based learning is the cornerstone of SIT Study Abroad. In every program, students integrate classroom study with field and research experience, creating synergies that enrich both their time abroad and their future studies.
  • ISA – International Studies Abroad
  • IES – Institute for the International Education of Students – Offers programs in South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
  • International Partnership for Service Learning – Programs offered in Czech Republic, Ecuador, England, France, India, Israel, Jamaica, Mexico, Philippines, Russia, Scotland, South Dakota, and Thailand. Programs combine service-learning volunteer work and academic study.

*There are many other organizations out there, we recommend you search online for a desired program by looking at various sites of Study Abroad listing and databases, NGOs, other Universities, etc.. You may also talk to the study abroad office for possible options.

Foreign University with Its Own Program

  • Many foreign universities have established programs for international students.
  • You may contact these institutions by phone, email, or through a website.

Direct Enrollment in a Foreign Institution

  • Direct enrollment is applying and being accepted to a foreign university, this is often an option for universities that that do not have programs in place to support foreign students.
