Admission to the IDS/IS Program
Most students need guidance in developing a problem-oriented, personalized approach to this major. Much of that thinking and advising is normally undertaken while a student is taking the gateway course to the IDS/IS degree, International Studies 250, Introduction to International Studies. The course has twin purposes: to acquaint you with critical international issues and to help you think through your individual program design.
Once you have decided to commit to the IDS/IS major, you should adhere to the following process.
The best procedure in declaring an IDS/IS major is to first carefully review the website in depth! The new IDS/IS website will be the primary guide in many cases and answers various general questions concerning IDS/IS programs. A thorough review of the website content is essential.
Another important starting point is to attend the general information sessions, which will be held monthly to assist prospective students; consult the important dates for IDS/IS majors for specific date, time and location.
In addition, Dr. Wayne Decker is available, if necessary, for consultation and further guidance on individual program content as well as evaluation of personal appropriateness for the major (email wdecker@email.arizona.edu). Students may also make an appointment with Dr. Karna Walter (email karna@email.arizona.edu) for another opinion on personal suitability for the major. Lastly, selected IDS/IS majors are available to give perspective majors further insight and comment on their own experiences in IDS/International Studies. |

To start the application process email isea@email.arizona.edu for a copy of the application packet, times of information sessions for this semester, and information on scheduling advising appointments.
Applicants then must begin to draft the IDS/IS application proposal. These proposals are vital in declaring the major. For assistance, students should see the guidelines distributed with the application packet.
Once a general draft is completed, students should make an appointment with Dr. Decker to review them. If necessary, Dr. Decker will offer advice on revisions. This session is also a useful time to discuss future course selections and foreign study.
At this point, with Dr. Decker's approvial of the general structure of the program, applicants must seek additional guidance and approval from the IDS/IS Faculty Mentors. These mentors are assigned according to functional track (APE, Development, etc) by Dr. Decker and can make a strong contribution in program design and course selection. |
Submitting a completed application packet is the final step for students in declaring the International Studies major. Student must submit applications to Dr. Wayne Decker for final approval by University College. When the application has been approved, students will be notified by mail and formally declared as Interdisciplinary Studies/ International Studies majors.
The process is more cumbersome than declaration of a traditional departmental major but, for the right student, it is worth the effort.
